The earth station of country’s first Bangabandhu Satellite-1 situated at Gazipur is opening today. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will inaugurate the earth station through videoconferencing from Bangabandhu International Conference Centre. Besides, the successful launch of Bangabandhu Satellite-1 will be celebrated on the same day.
Officials of Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) confirmed this to Bangladesh Post.
As per their information, on Saturday at 10.55 am Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will announce successful launching of Bangabandhu Satellite-1 and at 11.00 am she will inaugurate the earth station situated at Gazipur. Betbunia backup earth station will also be inaugurated at the same time. If everything goes on the satellite will start providing services from August- September, they said.
Gazipur district commissioner Humayun Kabir will preside over the inauguration programme at Telipara Earth Station area from Gazipur where local parliament members including other officials will be present. Bangabandhu Satellite Launching Project director Md Mesbahuzzaman said, after successful launching of the satellite, it starts transmitting signal with the earth stations. Now it’s only about time to start its commercial activities. The earth station is monitoring the satellites movements, measuring its activities and position. Till now no fault has been detected. He said, “The Gazipur earth station is tracking and controlling the satellite. It is testing the full system. After successful completion of tracking and testing of the satellite by September, it will be ready to go for full-fledged operation.
In the meantime, to operate the satellite a separate company titled Bangladesh Communication Satellite Company Limited (BCSCL) has been formed which has already signed a MoU with the Shipping Ministry on July 8 this year. With this agreement 35,000 local and foreign ships will receive satellite services from Bangabandhu-1 for their safe journey in the sea and local river channels.
Besides, the company has sent letters to different ministries and departments to avail the services of the satellite.
