Sader Hossein, Nawabganj
There has not been any activity related to election and national identity card in Nawabganj upazila of Dhaka for a month due to absence of responsible officer, said official sources.
Election Officer Farjana Abedin has been on maternity leave since last September. No acting officer joined there ahead of the eleventh Parliamentary elections. Consequently, all the works in Nawabganj upazila office have remained almost shelved. So a kind of vacuum and barrenness has been prevailing in the sector in the upazila.
The people of the upazila alleged that they have been suffering due to absence of upazila election officer and any other officer in the office. The people face sufferings when they go to the office to correct the national identity card or collect new NID card
Anika Rani, a housewife of the upazila, said, “I will vote for the first time as I became new voter. But I could not collect my NID card.”
Mayarani Baul, a resident of Bahra Kandamatra village, said that she applied for correcting her identity card. “Elections are coming, but I has not received my NID card till now.”
Ashraf Uddin, an employee at Nawabganj Upazila Election Office, said they are performing duty properly in the office in absence of upazila election officer.
Palash, a resident of the Gobendopur area, said that the identity card is not available even after months. There are many questions among the people. He demanded recruitment of an election official quickly in Nawabganj.
Regional Election Officer of Dhaka Rafiq Uddin Mandal said that they are trying to resolve the problem.
