The race for Awami League ticket at Pirojepur-1 constituency has heated up ahead of the 11th parliamentary election.
At least six leaders are passing hectic days amid all-out mass communication in a bid to snatch away the party nomination; however Sheikh Anny has emerged as a formidable candidate for getting nominated from the constituency.
Sheikh Anny Rahman, daughter of veteran politician Advocate Enayet Hossain Khan and eminent social activist, has managed to gain the trust of people as a popular leader.
Her personal integrity and commitment to serve the people’s along with people’s feelings for her father has made her a strong contender in the nomination race.
General voters believe if Anny gets the party’s nomination, she will work for socio-economic development of the people, especially for underprovided coastal people in Pirojpur.
She has already earned popularity at the locality for her humanitarian works. In fact, she is a pro-people leader. The moment a person faces any problems, she never hesitate to extend her helping hand. She always takes stance for the oppressed and sufferers, locals elaborated.
She has devoted herself to bringing about revolutionary changes in the society. She is vocal against exploitation of the poor people.
Now most of the local people are in her favour and they demand that Awami League give her the party nomination for the upcoming national polls.
While talking to Bangladesh Post Sheikh Anny said she has been working for betterment of the people of her area.
Awami League government led by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has been working to ensure balance development across the country.
“I believe that the present government will again come to power and keep on the development spree”.
Hasina’s government has not had a single failure. Sheikh Hasina has put her best efforts in every sector, she maintained.
AL has fulfilled every commitment that it promised to the nation in election manifesto, she added.
“Our leader Premier Sheikh Hasina made a commitment that if people vote for boat, Awami League would try to build a prosperous, hunger free, developing, modern, and digital Bangladesh within 2021 and we have gone from being a Least Developed Country to a Developing Country by 2018, three years before our committed timeframe”, she elaborated.
Her father Adv Enayet Hossain Khan was a veteran politician and a valiant freedom fighter, former lawmaker and Governor of Pirojpur district, and a close associate of father of the nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
He was elected vice-president of then Jagannath College now Jagannath University, a centre from where the movement of 1969 began.
He was elected as founding general secretary of Pirojpur district AL in 1958 and played a significant role in establishing people’s right.
He played a leading role in the 1969 Mass Upsurge for the downfall of Dictator President Ayub for which he was put behind the bar. He also served one year jail term for taking part in the anti-Ayub movement in 1962.
On May 19 in 1971, a firearm looting case was lodged against him.
Pirojpur 1 constituency consisting of Pirojpur Sadar, Nazirpur and Nesarabad upazilas is traditionally considered a strong base of Awami League (AL).
The party won the seat in 1973, 1979, 1991 national polls; although, abusing religious sentiment, former Jamaat-e-Islami lawmaker Delwar Hossain Sayedee – presently serving lifetime imprisonment being convicted as war criminal – captured the seat successively in 1996 and 2001.
However, present AL lawmaker from the constituency AKMA Awal reclaimed the seat in 2008 polls, defeating Sayedee. In 2014, Awal was reelected without any competition.
AKMA Awal aspires for the party nomination this time around as well.
In addition, AL central committee’s secretary for legal affairs SM Rezaul Karim, former lawmaker Shah Alam, Chhatra League central committee’s former GS Isahaq Ali Khan Panna are also making mass contact and communicating with the party high-command for getting nomination.
From BNP, four aspirants are eyeing the party nomination while in AL, present lawmaker Awal’s brother is his biggest competitor for nomination.
Although Sayedee is serving lifetime imprisonment and Jamat’s political activity is not visible, leaders and activists of the party are very much active backing Sayedee’s son Shamim Bin Sayedee who told the media that he is conducting mass communication in the locality to vie for the polls.
But some BNP leaders are in favour of giving Pirojpur 2 constituency to Sayedee’s family, arguing that Sayedee’s birthplace is there. In that case, BNP’s alliance partner Jatiya Party’s (Zafar) secretary general and former minister Mostafa Zamal Hyder might demand nomination from Pirojpur-1.
